While it is true that there are thousands of people working from home (and many of them a boasting a 6 figure income), the internet marketing hype has cause a lot of misconceptions. Any opportunity seeker has seen the outlandish claims of income and profits - $50,000 Per Week! Retire Rich in 1 Year or Less! 30 Days to Financial Freedom! Realistically, it is evident that these 'wonderful' income possibilities are unlikely and the odds of being struck by lightning are definitely greater! During this economic recession, massive layoffs, cut backs, and business closures are feeding the frenzy in the opportunity seekers market. While the economy may bounce back from double digit unemployment in time, more families are in a state of economic crisis. To make ends meet, more and more families are trying to adapt and prosper in the global marketplace of the world wide web.
The internet has come of age; therefore, more and more 'desperate' opportunity seekers are online looking for a 'quick fix' to their financial woes. Simply put, when you need the money - you need it immediately! Hence, the pressure is on! Does this sound familiar to you? The last thing that any business owner wants is an interruption in business servces. Just imagine . . . you are about to promote a hot item to your target audience (online or offline) and the ad agency botches up the promotion. Instead of buy 1 and get one free - somehow the ad agency prints buy one and get three! Funny? I don't think so. Hence you see the importance of previewing any promotion BEFORE it is published. Now I'm sure that in the example the agency will own the mistake and fix it at no cost. However, they probably will not compensate for your opportunity cost. What's opportunity costs? Let's say that promotion was set to go on Tuesday. Monday, you picked up the brochures to put in your store (or on your website) and you happen to catch the blunder before closing Monday evening. You have already spent $500 dollars for the brochures and you have put your customers on notice of the upcoming sale. So, you call the publishing editor and inform them of the blunder. After a sincere apology, the publishing editor promises the order will be ready Tuesday at 3:00 pm!. According to your previous traffic reports (everyone should track the behavior of their customers), you are expecting to sale an extra 20 widgets that cost $30 dollars retail/3 hours because of the promotion. Your store opens at 8:00. That's approximately $1400! - that's the cost of your missed opportunity. While there are other aspects of the sale, I help this will remind you of the importance of due diligence that pays off.
Due diligence pays off whether you are an online or offline merchant. Offline, there are contracts and binders - lawyers and courts readily available to ensure that all parties deliver the goods. The same thing exists online but the greatest strength of ecommerce ultimately becomes its Achilles Heel. The internet has allowed business to truly go global. What does this mean? As far as profits, it means that businesses online have an unlimited market to sale goods and services. However, cyber fraud is on the rise and is hard to prosecute. Not because crime isn't crime but because laws in Austria differ from laws in Sweden etc. There are some universal laws but in order to bring suit against the perpertrator, you must know how to find them, what laws apply and what court has jurisdiction. If you can't find them - they don't exist! So, what's the lesson in due diligence here? Online merchants really need to focus on terms and conditions, disclaimers, and warranties. Know who you are doing business with! I know its stuff but it is a must that the communications between you, your vendors, and affiliates is top notch. When looking at business opportunities on the net this should be more important to you than how much of a commission is promise. Check and double check your affiliate id's and links. Have an establish plan of action to take when: 1) Your commission check does not show up! (yes, this happens more than you would like to know) 2) Your hosting provider is attacked by a virus or hacker. 3) What happens to your affiliate program downline if the company folds? 4) Are your webpages stored onsite and do you have a copy stored on your computer? 5) What is your legal plan of action when problems arise? Are you up to speed on the laws governing your business practices? My intention here is just to get you to see the legal and problematic issues that can and do happen with an internet based home business. Your due diligence will not only save you from living a 'nightmare on Elm Street' but also ensure that you keep a steady stream of cash pouring into your bank account! I hope that NO ONE faces the ugly side of business but just to be planning for that million dollars, or a sports car is being a little unrealistic. So, study the laws that affect your practice or do the next best thing - Have a good lawyer on retainer and follow a PROVEN SYSTEM!!
